Sexuality and Camp Bob Selverstone, PhD, psychologist
and Bob Ditter. MEd, LCSW and camp
consultant
Thursday, 1-4 - Salon D
Campers talk about it, ask about it, act it out
and often leave your counselors mystified about
how to respond! What are your policies and guidelines
concerning that ever so natural, integral part
of all of us that many people fumble to explain?
How do you train your counselors to respond with
confidence to everything from innocent curiosity
to blatant provocation? After all, camp has always
been a place that has promoted healthy approaches
to life — healthy friendships; healthy
participation in sports and activities; healthy
eating and healthy contact with nature and the
outdoors. This session, conducted by two of camp’s
most distinguished presenters, will look at how
to integrate healthy sexuality into a mainstream
camp program. Given the highly sexualized culture
most children grow up in today, addressing sexuality
is an imperative.
Helping Counselors Focus on Issues of Appropriate and Inappropriate Camper Sexual Conversation and Behavior Bob Selverstone, PhD, psychologist
Friday, 9-10:15 - Dartmouth
At camp, most campers wonder about sex, tell sexual stories and jokes, listen to and tell sexual stories and experiment with some sexual behavior. You know it! And it is both normal and natural. Campers will learn something about sexuality whether we like it or not. This workshop is designed to help counselors have a more positive influence and to help your campers develop more healthy and positive attitudes and behavior regarding sexuality. Learn how to help counselors get beyond their own biases and prejudices, while respecting the concerns of directors and parents in this most sensitive issue. Ostriches are not invited.

Violence in Children’s Play Jane Katch, author, speaker and kindergarten teacher
Friday, 9-10:15 or Friday, 10:30-11:45 - Webster
Our culture is full of images of violence and sex that are far too complex for children to comprehend. At the same time, the play encouraged by these images makes adults uncomfortable. How can we encourage healthy play and help children to arrive at rules and limits that will help them feel secure? This workshop will explore the ways children make sense of violence in our culture and ways we can help them deal with it constructively.
